    Spinach in flowerSONY DSC

    Technicals

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea)- Spinach is dioecious, that is having male and female plants. Spinach maintains a rosette growth habit, like lettuce, under cool temperatures and short days. Day length longer than 12hrs triggers bolting. Commercial seed crops are separated by >5 miles. Polyester fabric lined cages will limit pollen dispersal. A good ratio for pollination is 1 male for every two females. Seed can be harvested when dry and striped from the stalk. This population was derived from long standing bloomsdale selected for overwintering. One of the earliest spring greens.

    Practicals

Plant a solid patch (>200 plants) in close proximity to enable cross-pollination. Try to deter animals (deer mainly) because they will not only eat the leaves but the flower stalks as well.
