White Lupin (Lupinus albus)
Lupin (Lupinus albus)
The white lupin is an ancient pulse of the old world that has been replaced by other pulses that do not require leaching of the bitter alkaloids. Plant like peas or even better with them. Unlike may other pulses lupins (like faba beans) tend to outcross. This bulk has may genotypes of both bitter and non-bitter but we have observed that the bitter types out compete the non-bitter and have less insect and disease issues. Therefore, we are not selecting for white flowers per se. With that said, like many other single recessive traits in an out crossing species, the white flower phenotype has persisted and pops up at a low frequency within a planting. Feel free to select at your discretion.
